What a Version 4 UUID Guarantees
- 128 bits, of which 122 are random. Six bits are fixed to mark the version and variant, so a v4 UUID is not fully random.
- Version 4 is stamped into the third group. It always begins with a 4.
- Variant 1 is stamped into the fourth group. It always begins with 8, 9, a or b.
- Not a secret. A UUID makes a fine identifier but a poor token, because the format itself carries no entropy guarantee against a determined attacker beyond the random bits.
