Cisco certifications are the gold standard for network engineering careers. While vendor-neutral certifications like CompTIA Network+ prove foundational networking knowledge, Cisco certifications prove you can configure, troubleshoot, and design real network infrastructure using the equipment that dominates enterprise and service provider environments.

If you are targeting a network engineering career, the CCNA is not optional — it is the minimum viable credential employers expect.

The Cisco Certification Structure

Cisco organizes certifications across five levels and multiple technology tracks.

CCNA (200-301)

The CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is a single exam covering:

  • Network fundamentals (OSI model, Ethernet, IP addressing, subnetting)
  • LAN switching (VLANs, STP, EtherChannel)
  • Routing (IPv4, IPv6, static routing, OSPF)
  • WAN concepts (PPP, HDLC, broadband)
  • IP services (DHCP, DNS, NAT)
  • Security fundamentals (ACLs, port security, SSH, RADIUS)
  • Automation and programmability basics

The CCNA is a significant step up from CompTIA Network+. It requires ability to configure Cisco devices, not just understand concepts.

Exam details:

  • Exam code: 200-301
  • Questions: 100–120 (multiple choice, drag-and-drop, simulation)
  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • Passing score: ~825/1000

Study time: 120–200 hours for someone coming from Network+.

CCNP (Professional Level)

The CCNP is one level above CCNA and requires a core exam plus a concentration exam. Multiple tracks are available:

The CCNP Enterprise track is the most common path for enterprise network engineers transitioning from CCNA.

Study time: 200–400 hours per concentration beyond CCNA.


CCIE (Expert Level)

The CCIE is one of the most respected certifications in IT. It consists of a written qualification exam followed by an 8-hour hands-on lab exam. Pass rates are low. The average CCIE has taken the lab exam two or three times.

CCIE tracks mirror CCNP tracks: Enterprise, Security, Data Center, Service Provider, Collaboration, and DevNet.

CCIE holders are among the highest-compensated technical individual contributors in the networking field, with salaries commonly exceeding $150K in the US market.


Cisco DevNet: Automation and Programmability

Cisco DevNet certifications (Associate, Professional, Expert) cover network automation and programmability — Python scripting for network devices, REST APIs, intent-based networking, and infrastructure as code.

As network environments increasingly use software-defined approaches, DevNet skills are becoming a differentiator for network engineers who want to advance into senior or architect roles.
