The volume of free and low-cost IT training available today removes most financial barriers to entering the field. The challenge is not finding resources — it is choosing the right ones for your current goal and not losing time to unfocused consumption. This guide organizes the best training resources by type and certification target so you can study efficiently.
A warning: watching videos is not practicing. For every hour of video study, spend at least one hour applying what you learned in a home lab or hands-on environment.
Free Resources
Professor Messer (CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+)
Professor Messer is the gold standard for free CompTIA certification study. His courses cover CompTIA A+ (220-1201 / 220-1202), Network+ (N10-009), and Security+ (SY0-701) with video lectures matched directly to the exam objectives.
The videos are free on his website and YouTube. Premium study groups, practice exams, and PDF study guides are available for a modest fee and are worth it when you are close to exam day.
Microsoft Learn
Microsoft Learn provides free structured learning paths for every Microsoft certification — Azure fundamentals (AZ-900), Azure Administrator (AZ-104), Azure Solutions Architect (AZ-305), Microsoft 365, and more. Learning paths include hands-on sandbox environments. No Azure account or payment required for most modules.
AWS Skill Builder
AWS Skill Builder is Amazon’s official free training platform. It includes learning paths for AWS Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect, SysOps Administrator, and specialty certifications. The free tier provides hundreds of hours of content including digital courses, labs, and practice question sets.
Google Cloud Skills Boost
Google Cloud Skills Boost provides free quests and labs for Google Cloud certifications. Labs run in real GCP environments with no credit card required for the free tier content. A strong complement to the Google Associate Cloud Engineer or Professional Cloud Architect path.
Linux Foundation Training
The Linux Foundation offers free introductions to Linux (LFS101) and several other open-source courses. Their paid courses and certifications (LFCS, CKA, CKAD) are the industry standard for Linux and Kubernetes skills.
TryHackMe (Security-Oriented IT)
TryHackMe provides gamified, browser-based labs for IT security and cybersecurity skills. A free account gives access to many rooms. It is particularly useful for learning defensive IT security, networking concepts, and SOC analyst skills.
Paid Resources Worth the Investment
CBT Nuggets
CBT Nuggets produces high-quality video training for most major IT certifications — CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft, AWS, and more. The trainers are active practitioners who hold the certifications they teach. A subscription runs ~$60/month. If you are working through multiple certifications in a year, the subscription pays for itself easily.
Pluralsight
Pluralsight is the strongest platform for cloud, DevOps, and advanced infrastructure content. Coverage includes AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Python, and Linux at depth. Skill assessments identify gaps in your knowledge. Plans start at ~$30/month; check for annual discounts.
Udemy
Udemy sells individual courses at $15–$20 during frequent sales (the $200 list price is almost never the actual price). The best Udemy courses for IT:
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect by Stephane Maarek (consistently highest-rated)
- Cisco CCNA by Neil Anderson
- Kubernetes for Absolute Beginners by Mumshad Mannambeth
Coursera and edX
Coursera and edX host courses from universities and vendors. Google’s IT Support Professional Certificate on Coursera is a valid entry-level credential that teaches real skills and is recognized by employers participating in the Google employer consortium.
