Remote IT work is widespread and growing. Infrastructure management, cloud engineering, DevOps, and many sysadmin functions can be performed entirely remotely. The IT field offers more remote work opportunities than almost any other professional discipline. The key is matching your experience level to the remote roles that realistically hire remotely.

Entry-level help desk is mostly in-person. Senior cloud engineering is mostly remote. Know which roles are realistically remote at your experience level.

How to Present Yourself as a Strong Remote Candidate

Remote hiring managers evaluate candidates differently than in-person ones. Emphasize:

  • Documentation skills — remote teams depend on written documentation. Mention your runbooks, wikis, or GitHub repos.
  • Async communication — comfort with Slack, ticketing systems, and written status updates matters more when there is no hallway communication.
  • Self-direction — remote IT roles require initiative. Your home lab demonstrates you work on problems without being told to.
  • Home office setup — a reliable internet connection, good audio for meetings, and a distraction-controlled workspace should be mentioned naturally.

Remote Work Salary Reality

Remote roles from large tech companies and coast-based employers often pay significantly above local market rates for the same role. A cloud engineer hired at “United States — Remote” by a San Francisco tech company may earn $130K–$160K while living in a low cost-of-living market.

However, some employers implement geographic pay adjustments — they pay based on where you live rather than where the company is headquartered. Ask about this before accepting any remote offer.
