What Length Does and Does Not Tell You
- Length narrows the field. A 32-character hex string is almost certainly one of a few 128-bit digests.
- Length does not decide. MD5, MD4, NTLM and LM all produce 32 hex characters and cannot be told apart from the output alone.
- Prefixes are stronger evidence. A value starting with
$2y$is bcrypt, and$argon2id$is Argon2. Those self-identify by design. - Confirm with a test vector. Hash a known input with each candidate and compare. That is the only reliable identification.
